The Pacific Highway Upgrading Program is the single largest
construction program in NSW for the last 40 years.
Safe and reliable access
A largely four-lane divided Pacific Highway will make travel
safer by separating opposing traffic flows along the most
dangerous sections. More than 10 cities and towns have been,
or will be bypassed, thereby reducing the conflict between
local traffic movements and those of fast moving highway
traffic. These measures will reduce the likelihood of head-on
collisions, and provide less restricted overtaking opportunities.
Travel times will become more reliable and journeys less
stressful.
Facilitate trade and commerce
An upgraded Pacific Highway will improve accessibility
between Sydney and Brisbane. Better access to facilities
and prime markets will benefit industries such as agriculture,
tourism and manufacturing. Reductions in travel times of
at least 70 minutes and savings in vehicle operating costs
will improve industry productivity in regions served by
the route.
Best management practice
Planning for an improved Pacific Highway has incorporated
national, state, regional and local transport needs. The
highway forms the key transport element of an integrated
land use and transport strategy that manages travel demand
and supports regional development.
