Construction progress

There are three stages in the project.

Design work and non-substantial construction

Detailed design design began in February 2005 with Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation (SMEC) working on engineering design, HBO+EMTB on urban design and Renzo Tonin Associates on noise management. The first phase of the design process was to finalise the precise vertical and horizontal alignment of the road and consider road alignment, corridor boundaries, level constraints, and clearance requirements. Detailed design on the Brunswick River Bridge commenced in the first half of 2005 and geotechnical field work commenced in the second half of 2005.

The first steps or non-substantial construction, incorporated such things as setting up fencing, undertaking site survey, demolishing property, test drilling/test excavations, building/road dilapidation surveys, minor clearing of vegetation (except where endangered ecological communities or threatened flora or fauna species would be impacted upon), and the establishment of site compounds in generally cleared, highly disturbed or non-environmentally sensitive areas.

Substantial construction

Substantial construction began in mid 2005 and involved heavy plant and machinery, traffic changes, drainage, earthworks, pavement construction and the start of bridge construction.

Handover and maintenance

The project was opened to traffic in July 2007 with finishing works completed by the end of 2007. Abigroup is contracted to maintain the upgrade on behalf of the RTA for ten years from the date of construction completion.
